2 In Europe

Paris, France

New Year’s in Paris! What could be more romantic! Carson and I decided we wanted to take a short trip after Nutcracker finished but we didn’t have anywhere in particular in mind. Using Google Flights we realized that we could get roundtrip tickets to Paris for $400- that was cheaper than most places in the US that we had been considering! So Paris it was! We had a 7hour layover in Toronto so we took advantage of that and took the “layover” train right into town for a quick look around. I’d been on tour in Toronto the year before so I was able to show Carson some of the sights- including the theater where I performed and where Mikhail Baryshnikov famously defected.

We only stayed four days in Paris but it was *almost* enough to do everything we’d planned at a very leisurely pace. That being said- I could go back and back to that city- and hopefully will be able to this season being only three hours away! It is as beautiful as I hoped it would be. I also enjoyed getting to practice my French helping Carson buy his funny souvenirs- chess pieces and fountain pens!

First stop is the Louvre. Open late certain nights of the week so we avoided the crowds!

Some of our itinerary:

  • Musee D’Orsay
  • Louvre
  • Notre Dame
  • Sainte-Chapelle
  • Paris Opera Ballet Kylian program at Palais Garnier
  • Arc de Triomphe with snow-chilled champagne
  • Sacre-Coeur
  • New Year’s Eve concert at the St-Sulpice
  • Pont Alexander

Sainte-Chappelle. So stunning.

Ceiling of the Palais Garnier. And below, the ceiling of the theater itself, painted by Chagall.

Just your run-of-the-mill shopping mall in Paris.

The view from under the Eifel. We climbed up in the snow.

Starting 2017 in Paris. I didn’t know then that within this New Year I’d be living in France!
